Meet Author Dr. Bonnie Kemske

Join us on Wednesday, March 7 to meet Dr. Bonnie Kemske, the author of The Teabowl: East and West, and enjoy an exploration and discussion about the iconic teabowl.

Noted for its sophistication, simplicity, and the reverence in which it is held around the world, the teabowl has become ubiquitous in contemporary ceramics. In her wide in scope and thorough in detail book, Kemske asks, ‘Why does a ceramic form that arose out of the specificity of Japanese tea ceremony hold so much appeal for potters and collectors in the West?’ Told from her personal perspective as an artist and tea ceremony student, she considers the context of the teabowl from its history to its contemporary aesthetic and its current use in political, social, and personal commentary.

Dr. Bonnie Kemske is a ceramic artist, writer, and curator. She was Editor of Ceramic Review 2010 to 2013, regularly writes features and reviews for international publication and contributes papers to the academic press. She has been curator of two exhibitions of teabowls, one at the Embassy of Japan in London and the other at Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall. She has been a student of Urasenke tea ceremony for many years.  www.bonniekemske.com
